Step-by-Step: Watering Your Batteries the Right Way

  1. Charge first, then water. Electrolyte expands during charging. Watering a discharged pack and then charging it will overflow acid onto the battery tops and tray. The only exception: if plates are visibly exposed, add just enough water to cover them, charge, then top off.
  2. Kill the power. Key off, Tow/Run switch to Tow if your cart has one, and remove the key.
  3. Wear eye protection and gloves. Electrolyte is sulfuric acid.
  4. Open the vent caps and look. Plates visible above the liquid = urgent. Liquid at the bottom of the fill well = normal time to water.
