Almost every wrong-part return we see starts the same way: somebody ordered a brake shoe, a controller, or a lift kit for "a Club Car" without knowing which platform they actually own. Club Car has built three different core vehicle architectures over the last four decades, and they do not share parts.
The serial number settles it in about sixty seconds. Here is where to find it, how to read it, and — just as important — what it will not tell you.
Where the serial number is on your Club Car
The serial number is printed on a barcode decal, not stamped into the frame. Where that decal lives depends on how old your cart is.
DS models (1981–present). Look under the dash on the passenger side, on the frame directly above the accelerator pedal. On many DS carts it is a riveted plate rather than a sticker.
Precedent, 2004–2007. Inside the passenger-side glove box.
Precedent 2008 and newer, plus Onward and Tempo. Below the passenger-side cup holder, or on the lower kick panel above the pedals.
Pre-1981 carts. Raise the seat and look at the aluminum I-beam frame section closest to the batteries, on the driver's side. If the plate is long gone, there is a reliable tell: 1975–1980 models have three pedals — two brake pedals and one accelerator.
If the decal is sun-faded to the point of being unreadable, do not guess. A misread year is how people end up with a 36-volt charger for a 48-volt pack.
How to decode a Club Car serial number
Club Car's serial number is twelve characters and it packs in three separate facts:
PQ 06 04 - 123456

└─────────────── model / platform code
So PQ0604-123456 is a 2006 Precedent electric, built in the fourth week of the model year.
Read it in that order every time: two letters, two digits, two digits, dash, sequence. The two digits after the letters are the year — that is the number you need for parts lookups.

Onward and Tempo prefixes vary by trim and model year, and Club Car has revised them more than once. If yours starts with something not on this list, run it through Club Car's own serial prefix decoder rather than trusting a third-party chart — including ours.
The three Club Car platforms, and why the distinction matters
Club Car has changed its core architecture three times:
- DS — 1981 to present. Squared-off body, exposed front cowl, sun-top struts mounted at the outer corners.
- Precedent — 2004 to present. Rounded one-piece front cowl with integrated headlight pods, struts mounted further inboard.
- Onward — 2017 to present, built on the Precedent architecture with substantially different trim, lighting, and accessory mounting.
Body panels, windshields, lift kits, brake hardware, and seat kits are almost never interchangeable across these three. Suspension and steering components frequently changed within the DS run as well, which is why the year digits matter and not just the platform.

What the serial number does not tell you
This is the part most lookup guides skip, and it is where the expensive mistakes happen.
It does not tell you what has been changed. A 2008 Precedent that has been converted to lithium and fitted with a 500-amp controller needs completely different diagnostic parts than a stock 2008 Precedent. If you bought the cart used, assume nothing about the drivetrain until you have looked at it. Our used golf cart pre-purchase inspection checklist covers what to verify.
It does not tell you your pack voltage reliably on older carts. Prefix codes encode voltage for some DS variants, but a cart that has been through a battery conversion may no longer match its prefix. Open the seat and count the batteries: six 8-volt batteries is 48 volts, six 6-volt is 36 volts, four 12-volt is 48 volts. Confirm before ordering anything from batteries and chargers.
Model year is not purchase year. Carts built late in a calendar year commonly carry the following model year. If your paperwork says 2015 and the serial says 16, the serial is the one parts catalogs use.
It does not diagnose anything. If your Precedent is throwing symptoms rather than needing a part number, start with the Club Car OBC reset and troubleshooting guide — a bad on-board computer handshake mimics a dozen more expensive failures.
Using your serial number to order the right parts
Once you have decoded it, write it down somewhere you will find it again — a photo on your phone works. Then:
- Match the platform first, then the year range. Most fitment charts are written as "Precedent 2004–2008," not per-year.

Check gas versus electric. The prefix tells you (
PGgas,PQ/PH/A*electric). Brake, drivetrain, and engine parts diverge completely here. - Verify voltage physically for anything electrical — controllers and motors are voltage-specific and a mismatch is not a returnable mistake once it is wired in.
- Bundle the wear items. If the cart is old enough that you are hunting serial numbers, it is old enough that a tune-up kit or brake kit is probably overdue anyway.

Where is the serial number on a Club Car Precedent? For 2004–2007, inside the passenger-side glove box. For 2008 and newer, below the passenger cup holder or on the lower kick panel above the pedals.
What year is my Club Car if the serial reads PH0901-123456?
PH is a Precedent i2 Excel Electric, 09 is the 2009 model year, and 01 means it was built in the first production week. The last six digits are just its build sequence.
My serial decal is missing. Can I still identify the cart? Usually, yes — but by inspection rather than lookup. Body shape narrows it to DS, Precedent, or Onward, and details like dash design, headlight housings, and charger receptacle style narrow the year range from there. We do this on service calls routinely; send us photos and we can usually place it.
