You came back, turned the key, pressed the pedal — and nothing. Maybe a click. Maybe a beep. Maybe complete silence.
This is the single most common service call we take between Labor Day and Thanksgiving, and it is almost never the mysterious catastrophe it feels like. A cart that sat through a Southern California summer has been through four months of 110-degree afternoons with nothing plugged in. The cart didn't break. It ran down, and heat made it run down faster.
Here is what actually happened, the sequence we run before touching a wrench, and the point where it stops being a driveway job.
Why summer storage kills carts specifically
Three things happen to a parked cart here, and they compound.
Batteries self-discharge — and heat accelerates it. Every battery loses charge sitting still. Lead-acid packs lose roughly 5–15% a month at mild temperatures, and that rate climbs sharply as ambient temperature rises. Inland Empire and Coachella Valley garages sit well above "mild" from June through September. Four months unplugged is enough to take a healthy pack to the floor.
Then sulfation sets in. When a lead-acid battery sits partially discharged, lead sulfate crystals form on the plates. Charged back up promptly, they dissolve and no harm is done. Left sitting, they harden — and hardened crystals permanently reduce the plate area available to make power. This is the part owners don't see coming: the pack didn't just go flat, it lost capacity while it was flat. A cart that used to run 30 miles comes back running 18.
Electrolyte boils off. Flooded lead-acid batteries lose water fastest in heat. Plates that sit exposed to air are damaged plates. If you didn't check water levels before you left, assume some cells are low — and check before you charge, never after. (Full method: how to water golf cart batteries.)
Lithium carts fare much better here. Lithium packs self-discharge slowly and don't sulfate. But most lithium systems have a battery management system that will latch into a protective sleep if pack voltage drops far enough, and some won't wake on a standard charger — which looks exactly like a dead cart to the owner.
The 20-minute wake-up sequence
Work through this in order. Don't skip ahead — half the carts we get called out for are fixed by step 2 or 3, and the owner had already moved on to suspecting the motor.
1. Rule out the embarrassing stuff first
- Tow/Run switch — under the seat on most E-Z-GO and Club Car models. If it got flipped to TOW when the cart was parked, nothing will happen and nothing is wrong.
- Key switch, and the actual key. Try the spare.
- Main disconnect / battery cutoff, if your cart has one.
- Charger still plugged in. Nearly every cart made in the last fifteen years locks out drive while connected.
- Seat and pedal microswitches. Some models won't engage if the seat sensor is unhappy after months of nothing sitting on it.
2. Look at the connections before you look at anything electrical
Pop the battery compartment. You're looking for white or blue-green crust on the terminals, a loose lug, a cable you can wiggle by hand, or a corroded ring terminal.
Terminal corrosion alone will stop a perfectly good pack from doing anything. Disconnect the negative first, clean each terminal with a baking-soda-and-water paste, rinse, dry completely, reassemble tight, and reconnect the negative last. That single job resolves a meaningful share of the "it was fine in May" calls we run.
While the compartment is open, check for a swollen battery case, a cracked case, or dried acid residue. Any of those and you stop here — that's a replacement conversation, not a charging conversation.
3. Measure the pack — don't guess
Put a multimeter across the main pack terminals and read resting voltage:

Then measure each individual battery, not just the pack. One battery reading far below its neighbours is the whole problem — a weak cell drags the entire string and will kill your new batteries too if you leave it in there. 4. If the charger won't turn on
Most golf cart chargers are designed not to energize below a minimum pack voltage — a safety feature, not a fault. A deeply discharged pack therefore creates a catch-22: it needs a charge to accept a charge.
The standard workaround is to bring the pack up manually with a 12V automotive charger on one or two batteries at a time, in short 15–30 minute sessions, until total pack voltage clears the threshold, then switch to the cart's own charger for the real charge.
Be careful with this. You are working around a safety interlock. Charging lead-acid batteries produces hydrogen, so ventilate and keep sparks away. Match voltages correctly — a 12V charger goes on a 12V battery, not across a 48V pack. Don't leave it unattended. If you're not completely confident, this is the right moment to stop, and it's a call we're happy to take.

5. Charge fully, then re-measure
Give it a complete, uninterrupted charge cycle — not an hour. Then let the pack rest an hour and read voltage again.
This is the moment of truth. A pack that charges to full and holds it came through storage fine. A pack that charges and then sags back down within a day or two is sulfated, and no amount of charging will bring the lost capacity back. 6. If there's power but it still won't move
A pack that's charged and healthy, and a cart that still does nothing, points somewhere else:
- A click but no movement — usually the solenoid. Seven signs yours is failing, and replacements are in solenoids.
- Beeps or a flashing light — that's a fault code, and it's telling you something specific. E-Z-GO RXV, TXT and PDS codes decoded here.
- Nothing at all, everywhere — work through the seven most common no-start causes.
Gas carts are a different animal after storage: stale fuel is the usual culprit, along with a varnished carburetor, a dead starter-generator belt, and rodent damage to wiring. Fresh fuel first, then look at the belt.
While you're at it — the other things that aged over the summer
The battery gets all the attention, but four months of heat does quiet damage elsewhere. Before you take the cart out:
- Tires. Pressure drops sitting, and UV and heat crack sidewalls. Check both pressure and the sidewalls themselves.
- Brakes. Rust on the drums and seized cables are normal after a long sit. Test them at low speed in the driveway before you get anywhere near a road. Brake parts.
- Belts and cables on gas carts — dry rot is real here.
- Rodents. Look for chewed wiring and nests around the motor and under the seat. This is more common than owners expect.
- A full tune-up if it's been a year. Tune-up kits and general parts.
How to not do this again next summer
The prevention is genuinely simple and costs very little.
Leave a modern charger plugged in. Current smart chargers monitor the pack and top it off automatically every week or so rather than cooking it. That single change eliminates almost everything described above. If you can't leave it plugged in: fully charge before you leave, top up the water on flooded batteries, disconnect the negative to eliminate parasitic draw, park in shade, and arrange for someone to charge it monthly. A month is roughly the outer limit before sulfation starts costing you real capacity.
Lithium owners: charge to a middling state of charge rather than 100% or empty, and check your manufacturer's storage guidance — most prefer to sit around half-charged.

When it's worth just calling us

- It's a gas cart with stale fuel and a gummed carburetor
